UVA alumnus and friend of the Jewish Studies Program, Mark Friedman, recently donated much of his father's personal collection detailing his escape from Nazi-controlled Austria to the UVA Small Special Collections Library. After Kristallnacht, his father, Herbert Friedman, was sent on the Kindertransport [the children’s transport] to England and later came to America. He saved many of his belongings from this time, including newspaper clippings, family letters, and even his numbered tag that identified him on the Kindertransport. Mark Friedman hopes that the collection will inspire others to show empathy and stop injustice.
For more information on the Friedman Collection donation, read this UVAToday article.
Mark Friedman is also the sponsor of the UVA Jewish Studies Herbert Friedman Graduate Fund for Holocaust Studies, donated in memory of his father. Manin Graduate Fellow Eyal Handelsman Katz became the first Friedman Fellow last fall. Also the descendent of a Holocaust survivor, he produced the documentary Slabe Jajko, which explored his grandmother's waning memory of the Holocaust.
