Dr. Riv-Ellen Prell Discusses Changes in Jewish Communal Engagement for the 2025 Grob Memorial Lecture

On Thursday, February 27, Dr. Riv-Ellen Prell (Professor Emerita of American Studies, University of Minnesota) delivered the annual Paul and Dorothy Grob Memorial Lecture, entitled “A New Era of Cultural Vitality for American Jews?” Dr. Prell discussed the effects of October 7, 2023, on Jewish life in the United States. Relying on sociological data, she concluded that since October 7, American Jews have engaged more with their community, finding a sense of belonging with other Jews. In other ways, however, American Jewish life has experienced deeper fissures within the community including those resulting from widely differing political positions.
