2025 Jules Roos and Samuel Grunfeld Fellowship for Israel Studies (up to $6,000)
The Jewish Studies Program is pleased to announce the call for proposals for the Jules Roos and Samuel Grunfeld Fellowship for Israel Studies, which supports summer research travel to Israel by UVA faculty and Ph.D. students in the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. The purpose of this fellowship, which is made possible through the generosity of Aaron Nir (COL ’87) and Daniel Nir of New York, is to support travel to Israel to conduct research there for an extended period of time, particularly during the summer months between academic years, though it may be used during the academic year after which it is awarded, for example, during a sabbatical or winter break.
Criteria for the award include:
- The research and travel must be conducted in Israel by faculty or Ph.D. students in the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. Faculty and Ph.D. students in all departments and programs in the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences are eligible for the award.
- The research must be original, intellectually rigorous, and make a significant contribution to the study of Israel in one or more of a variety of academic disciplines, including but not limited to Israeli history, politics, society, demography, culture, religion, and language, including Yiddish
- The research must contribute to scholarship that would reasonably be expected to lead to the publication and/or production of a scholarly or creative work (e.g., Ph.D. dissertation, scholarly book or article, film, musical score, or some other form of scholarly endeavor).
- Recipients of the award will be requested to provide a report with details of the work that was enabled by the award upon their return from Israel.
Applicants should submit a CV, a 1–2-page research proposal, and a budget. The proposal should explain why it is necessary to conduct the research in Israel. In addition, Ph.D. students should provide a letter from a faculty advisor in their departments that confirms that the proposed research project is viable. Deadline for submission: March 24, 2025.
