Austin Benson

PhD in English, UVA

Austin Benson earned his Ph.D. in English at UVA in 2025, where he worked primarily on Middle English, Anglo-Norman, and Anglo-Latin literature. His dissertation, The Trilingual Book: Multilingualism, Manuscript Culture, and the Shaping of Insular Verse ca. 1160–ca. 1340, traced the development of poetry in these languages in the surviving trilingual manuscripts of post-Conquest Britain. More broadly, Austin studies the sociolinguistic and manuscript cultures of high and later medieval Britain. As a part of this interest, he is currently carrying out research into Anglo-Jewish poetry and the manuscripts of Christian Hebraists in England.
