Panelists
James Loeffler is Jay Berkowitz Professor of Jewish History at the University of Virginia, where he also serves as Ida and Nathan Kolodiz Director of the Jewish Studies Program. He is a co-covenor of the UVA Human Rights Research Network, a faculty partner in the UVA Religion, Race & Democracy Lab, and co-editor of the Association for Jewish Studies Review. In 2020 he was elected a Fellow of the American Academy for Jewish Research.
John C. Jeffries, Jr., is a David and Mary Harrison Distinguished Professor of Law and counselor to UVA President Jim Ryan ’92. He served as Law School dean from 2001-08 and academic associate dean from 1994-99. In 2017, he received the Thomas Jefferson Award for excellence in scholarship, the highest honor given to members of the University community.
Leslie Kendrick is the White Burkett Miller Professor of Law and Public Affairs, and director of the Law School’s Center for the First Amendment. She is a member of the American Law Institute, past chair of the AALS Section on Torts and Compensation Systems and a member of the Harvard Higher Education Forum. She served as the Law School’s vice dean from 2017-2021.

Micah Schwartzman is director of the Karsh Center for Law and Democracy and the Hardy Cross Dillard Professor of Law at UVA. His research and teaching focus on law and religion, jurisprudence, political philosophy and constitutional law.
