Peter Ochs

Bronfman Professor of Modern Judaic Studies and Professor of Religious Studies

Peter Ochs is Edgar Bronfman Professor of Modern Judaic Studies at the University of Virginia, where he directs the Religious Studies Graduate Programs in “Scripture, Interpretation, and Practice,” an interdisciplinary approach to the Abrahamic traditions, and he directs the UVA Resarch Initiative on "Religion, Politics, and Conflict."

He is co-founder of The Society for (Jewish) Textual Reasoning and of The (Abrahamic) Society for Scriptural Reasoning. Ochs writes and teaches about Jewish philosophy; rabbinics and semiotics; comparative Jewish, Christian and Muslim scriptural interpretation and reasoning; and religion and peacebuilding.
