Alumna Jennifer Hansen-Glucklich Awarded Fellowship at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

Congratulations to University of Mary Washington Associate Professor of German and UVA Jewish Studies alumna Jennifer Hansen-Glucklich (PhD '11) on being awarded the Fred and Maria Devinki Memorial Fellowship at the Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum for 2027. As a fellow, she will conduct research on her project, “Inscribed for Life: Memory, Personal Names, and Naming Rituals in Jewish Memorial Culture.” The project investigates the significance of Jewish personal names and rituals of naming in the remembrance and memorialization of Jewish persecution, trauma, and martyrdom, including Jewish victimization during the Holocaust, the Inquisition, expulsions, massacres, and pogroms.

Professor Hansen-Glucklich has written extensively in the fields of Holocaust and German Studies. Just last year, she released her second monograph, German Memorials, Motifs, and Meanings: A Cultural History in Bronze, Wood, and Stone (University of Massachusetts Press), which examines enduring, German memorial motifs derived from myth, folklore, Christianity, national iconography, and post-Holocaust imagery. You can learn more about her book here.
